Canada's ECCC Announces New Regulatory Framework for Methane Emissions from Compressor Engine Exhaust

Ottawa, Ontario - The Government of Canada, through Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), has proposed a regulatory framework to reduce methane emissions from compressor engine exhaust in the oil and gas industry. The framework supports Canada's 2030 target of reducing methane emissions by 40-45% below 2012 levels. It requires operators to implement measures such as best available technologies and regular leak detection and repair programs and includes reporting requirements for transparency. The ECCC aims to have the regulations in place by 2022, as part of broader efforts to address climate change and achieve greenhouse gas reduction targets.

The ECCC encourages stakeholders and the public to provide input on the proposed regulatory framework during the consultation period, which will be announced in the coming months. Together, collaborative efforts will help Canada meet its climate commitments and create a cleaner and more sustainable future for all Canadians.
